Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.5 just reported 95 km east of Hualien City, Japan
5.5 quake 24 Oct 8:05 am (GMT +9)

A shallow magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported in the morning near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Tuesday, October 24th, 2023, at 8:05 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.5 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.6, and Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau (CWB) at magnitude 6.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Yonakuni (pop. 1,700) located 71 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 95 km from the epicenter, and Yilan (pop. 94,200) 118 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
