An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 occurred only 18 minutes ago 6 km northeast of Grindavik, Iceland, the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.4 km beneath the epicenter near Grindavik, Grindavíkurbær, Southern Peninsula, Iceland, around noon on Friday, November 10th, 2023, at 12:44 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Grindavik (pop. 2,900) located 6 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Vogar (pop. 1000) located 11 km from the epicenter, and Reykjanesbær (pop. 2,000) 15 km away.
