Significant 5.5 quake hits near Antofagasta, Chile

The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile reported a magnitude 5.5 quake in Chile near Antofagasta, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday, November 27th, 2023, at 7:08 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 57 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Taltal (pop. 10,000) located 93 km from the epicenter, and Antofagasta (pop. 309,800) 103 km away.
