Small magnitude 3.5 quake hits 22 miles northeast of Yucaipa, California, United States late at night 3.5 quake 27 Nov 11:59 pm (GMT -8) A very shallow magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported late at night near Yucaipa, San Bernardino County, California, USA. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, November 27th, 2023, at 11:59 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the United States Geological Survey, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Big Bear (pop. 12,300) located 3 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yucaipa (pop. 53,300) located 22 miles from the epicenter, Highland (pop. 54,900) 25 miles away, Apple Valley (pop. 72,200) 25 miles away, Banning (pop. 30,900) 25 miles away, Redlands (pop. 71,000) 26 miles away, Beaumont (pop. 43,800) 27 miles away, Hesperia (pop. 93,300) 29 miles away, and San Bernardino (pop. 216,100) 30 miles away. In Riverside (pop. 322,400, 40 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
