Magnitude 2.8 earthquake strikes near La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Just 37 minutes ago, a 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck near La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Tuesday, December 19th, 2023, at 9:01 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 6.6 km below the surface.
The event was filed by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Military Applications Division - Earth and Environmental Science (CEA) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.1.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Ars-en-Ré (pop. 1,400, 35 km away), Le Bois Plage (pop. 2,400, 42 km away), Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron (pop. 6,800, 46 km away), Les Sables d'Olonne (pop. 16,100, 52 km away), and La Rochelle (pop. 76,800, 59 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
