Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.2 just reported 8 km northwest of Aliağa, Turkey 4.2 quake 6 Jan 2:53 pm (GMT +3) A very shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Aliağa, İzmir, Turkey. According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake hit on Saturday, January 6th, 2024, at 2:53 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 9.2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) at magnitude 3.8, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Aliağa (pop. 44,900) located 8 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Foca (pop. 15,200) located 21 km from the epicenter, Menemen (pop. 53,500) 29 km away, and perugamon (pop. 57,200) 41 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Izmir (pop. 2,500,600) located 51 km from the epicenter, Karabağlar (pop. 458,000) 55 km away, Ayvalik (pop. 70,000) 57 km away, Urla (pop. 45,200) 57 km away, and Turgutlu (pop. 103,300) 80 km away.
Earthquake data: Date & time: Jan 6, 2024 02:53 pm (Istanbul time) local time (6 Jan 2024 11:53 GMT)Magnitude: 4.2 Depth: 9.2 km Epicenter latitude / longitude: 38.83°N / 26.89°E (Aliağa, İzmir, Turkey) Primary data source: AFADhttps://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquake/news/230731/Moderate-earthquake-of-magnitude-42-just-reported-8-km-northwest-of-Aliaa-Turkey.html
