Small magnitude 3.5 quake hits 30 miles north of Midland, Texas, United States early morning 3.5 quake 5 Mar 1:37 am (GMT -6) An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred early morning on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024, at 1:37 am local time near Midland, Midland County, Texas, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Lamesa (pop. 9,400) located 23 miles from the epicenter, Andrews (pop. 13,800) 27 miles away, Stanton (pop. 2,900) 27 miles away, and Midland (pop. 133,000) 30 miles away. In Seminole (pop. 7,400, 38 miles away), Big Spring (pop. 28,900, 38 miles away), Odessa (pop. 119,000, 43 miles away), and West Odessa (pop. 22,700, 47 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
