Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.2 just reported 31 km southwest of Segovia, Colombia

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Segovia, Municipio de Segovia, Antioquia, Colombia, was reported only 14 minutes ago by The Colombian Geological Service (SGC), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, at 3:34 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Vegachi (pop. 9,600) located 6 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yali (pop. 3,900) located 17 km from the epicenter, Remedios (pop. 6,400) 26 km away, and Segovia (pop. 39,900) 31 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Puerto Berrio (pop. 34,000) located 54 km from the epicenter, Yarumal (pop. 22,400) 73 km away, Barbosa (pop. 53,900) 74 km away, and Zaragoza (pop. 18,800) 76 km away.
