Small tremor of magnitude 3.4 just reported 9 miles northeast of San Jose, California, United States 3.4 quake 13 Sep 3:15 pm (GMT -7) Just 8 minutes ago, a 3.4-magnitude earthquake struck near San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Friday, September 13th, 2024, at 3:15 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in East Foothills (pop. 8,300) located 4 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Milpitas (pop. 77,600) located 8 miles from the epicenter, San Jose (pop. 1,026,900) 9 miles away, Santa Clara (pop. 126,200) 12 miles away, seonibeil (pop. 151,800) 16 miles away, Fremont (pop. 232,200) 16 miles away, Mountain View (pop. 80,400) 18 miles away, and Livermore (pop. 88,100) 19 miles away. In San Francisco (pop. 864,800, 44 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
