Small tremor of magnitude 2.8 just reported 36 miles north of Canberra, New South Wales, Australia 2.8 quake 11 Oct 6:01 am (GMT +11) A very shallow magnitude 2.8 earthquake was reported early morning near Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia. According to Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the quake hit on Friday, October 11th, 2024, at 6:01 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Oolong (pop. 60) located 2 miles from the epicenter. In Yass (pop. 6,500, 15 miles away), Murrumbateman (pop. 3,200, 16 miles away), Gundaroo (pop. 1,100, 19 miles away), Crookwell (pop. 2,600, 27 miles away), Sutton (pop. 2,500, 28 miles away), Bywong (pop. 1,300, 29 miles away), Goulburn (pop. 22,600, 32 miles away), Bruce (pop. 7,300, 34 miles away), and Canberra (pop. 367,800, 36 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
