Significant magnitude 5.8 quake hits 47 km east of Malatya, Turkey in the morning 5.8 quake 16 Oct 10:46 am (GMT +3) Just 4 minutes ago, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Malatya, Turkey. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024, at 10:46 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Doğanyol (pop. 6,300) located 15 km from the epicenter, and Baskil (pop. 15,900) 27 km away. In Malatya (pop. 441,800) located 47 km from the epicenter, Çermik (pop. 21,000) 56 km away, Kâhta (pop. 73,100) 64 km away, Siverek (pop. 175,300) 75 km away, Ergani (pop. 52,700) 78 km away, and Antigiaman (pop. 223,700) 81 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
