Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 33 km northwest of Āwash, Ethiopia

A shallow magnitude 5.0 earthquake was reported early evening near Āwash, Āfar, Ethiopia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Friday, December 27th, 2024, at 6:26 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Metehara (pop. 23,400) located 29 km from the epicenter, and Āwash (pop. 36,500) 33 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Debre Birhan (pop. 57,800) located 72 km from the epicenter, Gelemso (pop. 16,100) 76 km away, Abomsa (pop. 15,300) 92 km away, Nazrēt (pop. 214,000) 99 km away, and Bedēsa (pop. 17,500) 99 km away.
