Small magnitude 3.3 earthquake 29 miles southeast of Port Augusta, South Australia, Australia Just 21 minutes ago, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Port Augusta, South Australia, Australia. The tremor was recorded late at night on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, at 11:48 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles below the surface. The event was filed by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Willowie (pop. 29) located 6 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wilmington (pop. 560) located 9 miles from the epicenter, and Quorn (pop. 1,200) 24 miles away. In Port Augusta (pop. 6,500, 29 miles away), Solomontown (pop. 1,500, 40 miles away), Port Pirie (pop. 13,200, 40 miles away), Peterborough (pop. 1,500, 41 miles away), Jamestown (pop. 1,600, 44 miles away), Whyalla (pop. 3,600, 48 miles away), and Crystal Brook (pop. 1,500, 49 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
