Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.6 just reported 43 km northeast of Meiktila, Myanmar (Burma) An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred only 8 minutes ago 43 km northeast of Meiktila, Myanmar (Burma), the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km beneath the epicenter near Meiktila, Meiktila District, Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma), in the morning on Sunday, April 13th, 2025, at 8:25 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Meiktila (pop. 177,400) located 43 km from the epicenter, Kyaukse (pop. 50,500) 44 km away, Sagaing (pop. 78,700) 74 km away, and Myingyan (pop. 141,700) 74 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mandalay (pop. 1,208,100) located 84 km from the epicenter, Yamethin (pop. 59,900) 88 km away, and Pyin Oo Lwin (pop. 117,300) 100 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
