Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Chilecito, Departamento de Chilecito, La Rioja Province, Argentina

Just 7 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Chilecito, Departamento de Chilecito, La Rioja Province, Argentina. The tremor was recorded late at night on Monday, June 23rd, 2025, at 10:53 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 111. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Vinchina (pop. 2,800) located 61 km from the epicenter, and Chilecito (pop. 42,200) 63 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Jose de Jachal (pop. 21,000) located 120 km from the epicenter, and La Rioja (pop. 178,900) 124 km away.
