The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday, July 17th, 2025, at 3:24 am local time at a very shallow depth of 6.2 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yerington (pop. 3,100) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Silver Springs (pop. 5,300) 20 miles away, Fallon (pop. 8,500) 25 miles away, Dayton (pop. 9,000) 30 miles away, Fernley (pop. 19,400) 33 miles away, and Carson City (pop. 54,500) 39 miles away. In Sparks (pop. 96,100, 46 miles away), Reno (pop. 241,400, 48 miles away), Spanish Springs (pop. 15,100, 49 miles away), and Sun Valley (pop. 19,300, 49 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
