Significant magnitude 5.8 quake hits 76 km south of Poso, Indonesia in the evening

Indonesia was shaken near Poso, Kabupaten Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 37 minutes ago, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Poso, Kabupaten Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, Indonesia, in the evening on Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at 9:08 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.8.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Masamba (pop. 38,000) located 64 km from the epicenter, and Poso (pop. 47,500) 76 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Palopo (pop. 190,900) located 114 km from the epicenter, and Rantepao (pop. 40,400) 130 km away.
