Moderate magnitude 4.6 quake hits 7 km northwest of Culiacan, Mexico in the evening A very shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported in the evening near Culiacan, Culiacán, Estado de Sinaloa, Mexico. According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2025, at 8:12 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In La Limita de Itaje (pop. 580) located 6 km from the epicenter, Culiacan (pop. 808,400) 7 km away, Culiacancito (pop. 4,300) 13 km away, and El Diez (pop. 6,900) 15 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Villa Juarez (pop. 21,000) located 26 km from the epicenter, Licenciado Benito Juárez (pop. 24,200) 26 km away, Villa de Costa Rica (pop. 24,900) 29 km away, and Navolato (pop. 29,200) 32 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Guamuchil (pop. 63,700) located 96 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
