Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 21 km northeast of Canas, Costa Rica The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Costa Rica near Canas, Cañas, Provincia de Guanacaste, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday, November 3rd, 2025, at 9:36 am local time at a very shallow depth of 6. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Tilaran (pop. 7,300) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Canas (pop. 20,300) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in San José (pop. 31,400) located 48 km from the epicenter, Liberia (pop. 45,400) 53 km away, Quesada (pop. 27,300) 63 km away, Chacarita (pop. 26,400) 67 km away, Nicoya (pop. 15,300) 70 km away, and Esparza (pop. 15,600) 71 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Francisco (pop. 55,900) located 111 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
