Significant magnitude 5.5 quake hits 7 km northeast of Aso, Japan early evening

Just 8 minutes ago, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Aso, Aso-shi, Kumamoto, Japan. The tremor was recorded early evening on Tuesday, November 25th, 2025, at 6:01 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 9.10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Aso (pop. 27,000) located 7 km from the epicenter.
In Ozu (pop. 35,200) located 25 km from the epicenter, Kikuchi (pop. 49,500) 27 km away, Okino (pop. 43,300) 32 km away, Koshi (pop. 61,800) 32 km away, Yamaga (pop. 49,100) 39 km away, Koto (pop. 543,700) 41 km away, and Kumamoto (pop. 738,900) 44 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Fukuoka (pop. 1,612,400) located 93 km from the epicenter.
