Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 just reported 23 km south of Kalemyo, Myanmar (Burma)

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Kalemyo, Kale District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar (Burma), was reported only 14 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, at 12:55 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Thailand's Earthquake Observation Division (TMD), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Webula (pop. 1000) located 14 km from the epicenter, and Kalemyo (pop. 348,600) 23 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kalewa (pop. 8,800) located 35 km from the epicenter, Falam (pop. 5,400) 39 km away, Tedim (pop. 20,000) 60 km away, Mawlaik (pop. 44,500) 82 km away, and Ngur (pop. 32,700) 93 km away.
