Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.1 just reported 19 km southeast of Sallanches, France The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.1 quake in France near Sallanches, Upper Savoy, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, only 4 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday, January 12th, 2026, at 7:28 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.1, and France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 3.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Megeve (pop. 5,100) located 11 km from the epicenter, Sallanches (pop. 16,700) 19 km away, Albertville (pop. 19,100) 28 km away, and Cluses (pop. 19,800) 33 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Aosta (pop. 35,300) located 47 km from the epicenter, Annecy-le-Vieux (pop. 21,500) 47 km away, Annecy (pop. 49,200) 48 km away, and Cran-Gevrier (pop. 19,400) 50 km away.
