Small magnitude 2.7 earthquake 2 miles northeast of Moreno Valley, California, United States An earthquake of magnitude 2.7 occurred around noon on Tuesday, January 13th, 2026, at 1:33 pm local time near Moreno Valley, Riverside County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 8.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.7 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.8. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Moreno Valley (pop. 204,200) located 2 miles from the epicenter, and Redlands (pop. 71,000) 6 miles away. In Colton (pop. 54,600, 9 miles away), Riverside (pop. 317,300, 10 miles away), San Bernardino (pop. 216,100, 11 miles away), Highland (pop. 54,900, 11 miles away), Perris (pop. 75,000, 13 miles away), Rialto (pop. 103,100, 13 miles away), and Fontana (pop. 212,700, 15 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
