Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 24 km northwest of Tagudin, Philippines The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in the Philippines near Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday, February 16th, 2026, at 9:36 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well. A third agency, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Rimus (pop. 6,700) located 22 km from the epicenter, Santa Maria (pop. 28,000) 24 km away, and Tagudin (pop. 35,800) 24 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in San Fernando (pop. 83,000) located 43 km from the epicenter, Bauang (pop. 77,700) 53 km away, Vigan (pop. 48,500) 67 km away, Bantay (pop. 37,100) 68 km away, La Trinidad (pop. 142,900) 71 km away, and Baguio (pop. 272,700) 75 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
