Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 3 miles southwest of Brawley, California, United States after midnight Just 2 minutes ago, a 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Brawley, Imperial County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Sunday, May 10th, 2026, at 12:10 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Brawley (pop. 25,900) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Imperial (pop. 17,100) 8 miles away, Calipatria (pop. 7,400) 12 miles away, and El Centro (pop. 44,000) 12 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Calexico (pop. 40,100) located 21 miles from the epicenter, and Santa Isabel (pop. 29,300) 23 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Yuma (pop. 95,500) located 58 miles from the epicenter, and Coachella (pop. 44,600) 60 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
