Moderate magnitude 4.1 quake hits 18 miles northwest of Sitka, Alaska, United States early afternoon A very shallow magnitude 4.1 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Sitka, Sitka City and, Alaska, USA. According to The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), the quake hit on Sunday, May 10th, 2026, at 2:46 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Sitka (pop. 8,900) located 18 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tenakee Springs (pop. 130) located 33 miles from the epicenter, Angoon (pop. 460) 34 miles away, Hoonah (pop. 760) 55 miles away, and Kake (pop. 570) 60 miles away.
