Small magnitude 3.3 quake hits 13 km southeast of Rosarito, Mexico early morning An earthquake of magnitude 3.3 occurred early morning on Thursday, May 28th, 2026, at 2:41 am local time near Rosarito, Playas de Rosarito, Estado de Baja California, Mexico, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 17.60 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.3. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Villas de San Pedro (pop. 120) located 1 km from the epicenter, Rosarito (pop. 100,700) 13 km away, Las Delicias (pop. 15,500) 18 km away, Villa del Prado 2da Seccion (pop. 18,200) 19 km away, La Joya (pop. 26,900) 21 km away, Porticos de San Antonio (pop. 34,200) 21 km away, Tijuana (pop. 1,922,500) 28 km away, and Terrazas del Valle (pop. 20,400) 31 km away. In Tecate (pop. 64,800, 49 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
