Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred late at night on Tuesday, June 9th, 2026, at 10:37 pm local time near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 24 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Papa'ikou (pop. 1,300) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Hilo (pop. 43,300) 14 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 14 miles away, Kea‘au (pop. 2,300) 15 miles away, Hawaiian Beaches (pop. 4,300) 16 miles away, Orchidlands Estates (pop. 2,800) 17 miles away, Ainaloa (pop. 3,000) 19 miles away, and Mountain View (pop. 3,900) 21 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
