Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes near Copiapo, Provincia de Copiapó, Region de Atacama, Chile

Chile was shaken near Copiapo, Provincia de Copiapó, Region de Atacama, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 only 5 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Copiapo, Provincia de Copiapó, Region de Atacama, Chile, in the morning on Thursday, June 11th, 2026, at 7:22 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Huasco (pop. 9,000) located 82 km from the epicenter, Freirina (pop. 6,000) 91 km away, Caldera (pop. 16,200) 100 km away, Vallenar (pop. 44,900) 114 km away, and Copiapo (pop. 129,300) 120 km away.
