Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.7 reported 98 km south of Escuintla, Guatemala An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred late at night on Sunday, June 21st, 2026, at 10:00 pm local time near Escuintla, Municipio de Escuintla, Departamento de Escuintla, Guatemala, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 45.81 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Puerto San Jose (pop. 18,700) located 56 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include La Gomera (pop. 24,000) located 80 km from the epicenter, Guazacapan (pop. 18,900) 81 km away, Masagua (pop. 45,300) 87 km away, Escuintla (pop. 156,300) 98 km away, and Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa (pop. 112,800) 105 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
