Small magnitude 3.4 earthquake strikes near Skegness, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom A very shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported in the early afternoon near Skegness, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom. According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), the quake struck on Friday, September 18th, 2026, at 2:04 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 1. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their reports. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the RaspberryShake citizen-seismograph network, which also listed the quake at magnitude 3.4. Weak shaking might have been felt in Chapel Saint Leonards (pop. 3,500), located 22 km from the epicenter; Ingoldmells (pop. 4,000), 22 km away; Mablethorpe (pop. 12,500), 23 km away; and Skegness (pop. 24,900), 25 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hunstanton (pop. 9,300), located 40 km from the epicenter, and Louth (pop. 16,400), 41 km away. In Cleethorpes (pop. 32,000, 51 km away), Grimsby (pop. 86,100, 54 km away), and Boston (pop. 45,300, 56 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
