Ok, I got the mssg that Arabic will be encrypted on 17th December!! So I went online and subscribed to UBI.

The next morning someone from UBI office rang me and asked me if I had a Tarbs box! I said to her that my sister owns one but she is not gonna join UBI. I said that I have 3 other normal receivers and I would like to use one of those!! So she said NO. you either use Tarbs or you buy a special new receiver! They DO NOT sell the new receivers themselves!! They have negotiated with a supplier to supply the public with the receivers at a reduced price so in order not to put-off the coustmers from joining! She gave me a 1300 number to call and find out the price and to order the unit and then when it arrives, I need to call them again to continue with the subscribtion proceedures!!

I asked her what type of encryption are they gonna use and she answered "signal encryption"!!!!!! how clever! lol. So i asked her why can't they send me a Smart Card and I use it in one of the boxes that I have! The surprising answer was that they will NOT send smart cards and that they will activate the old smart cards in the MDS boxes of Tarbs to receive the signal!!! At that instant I asked her to speak with one of the tech people who knows a bit more than she does, and she refused saying that they are not allowed to transfer me to tech unless I have a problem with reception of channels!!!!
So now my questions are:
1) I thought the $50 dollars activation fee is to send out new smart cards! What has happened to that rumour?!?

2) What are these new special receivers that they are wanting us to use and how much are they!! If UBI themselves are not supplying them or making profit out of them, then why not let people use their own receivers if they can get the new cards to work in them?!?

3) Why are we not allowed to speak with Tech guys from UBI if their telephone staff does not know WTF they are talking about!! If someone has more knowledge about satellites than a telephonist and wants to talk to the Tech people, they should allow him!!

Sorry for the long post, but your answers will be appreciated greatly!

Regards,,,

1) The activation free is to active the IRD/SC to work with UBI once the encryption is started. You need to use a UBI-compatible STU which is either the TARBS STU or the new UBI ones which will be ready soon.

2) The new UBI STUs are from the same company that supplied the TARBS STU "MDS".

3) You can only speak to Tech Support if you're a UBI subscriber.

I hope this will answer your questions.

Let me see if I have this right?

UBI have arranged a new supply of MDS boxes which if you don't own one previously (ex Tarb's)you have to actually purchase outright.

Oh joy hand out for a box that is only usefull to watch UBI on and do nothing else with.

On top of that you also must arrange your own installer from somewhere to put a dish on B3. Or have one move an (ex Tarb's) off of Pas 8?

They won't even last 6 months!

and that's not even mentioning the new boxes from Asia that do MDS decoding in the software. E.G emulate a working MDS card/box and open all channels.

MDS is the most easy hacked system around..

Firstly Mentor in Tiawan are a pack of clowns who outsource the manufactering to China.. now another factory in China two years ago got orders from Indonesia clients to look at the Thaicom 3 signal (old TARBS C BAND Sat Contribution for PAS8) and hack the signal and make a "clone" box.

Many boxes have been made and are located in Asia, parts of MEast & Africa...

All must watch their money as UBI is a definate goner... if new company dont use Irdeto they are fked....within 6mths....

I concur with satfreak. TARBS, and other PayTV providers in Australia rely on the fact that if they have a “different” encryption system than the rest of the world they have a better chance of it staying un-hacked. Well guess what boys? We live opposite Asia! A couple of billion hackers, which would sell their mother for a dollar! You’ll have to do much better than that, boys.
BTW, providers of Australia. If you weren’t so greedy and untrusting and do what the rest of the world does (sell sub cards, reasonably cheap), the margin wouldn’t be as attractive to hackers, lots more people would afford it, you’d actually make a profit as less overheads and finally if your encryption system got hacked you would only have to send out new cards and change encryption. That simple! But naaaa, you’re greedy and charge 4 times the price ‘cause you can. Well,… serves you rite! Suffer!

The best things I like about any forum is nobody knows who is who. Well most of the time, but again the ball is in UBI's court, But when it comes to any other encryption in the world outside NDS they all
can be compromised. Again I won't get into it but even the Irdeto 2 services for whoever owns them Fox, Aust, WMI, Globe are being shared across Australia. Now I say shared not hacked but at the end of the day the ppl have picture on their screens and that is what counts.
Again two words Dreambox and the net.

Yes, but... If FOX/Austar decides they are sick of it and it’s eating into their pockets, Fox will just switch off I2 and Austar will just change encryption to NDS too. All that at such a small cost.
TARBS and now UBI Globecast and whatever would have to go around collecting the old shitboxes and replacing them with new shitboxes.

I find it so unfair for most of the people wanting to watch UBI channels with a subscription while over 11000 or more gets free with old modded tarbs boxes in melbourne as mentioned @other forums as well. UBI knows MDS was hacked and distributed specially to most Italians and some others! in melbourne but UBI choose to stick up with its old MDS system and now telling to customers to get a new box with MDS on it. I wonder how long it'll take for them to tell us to get some other box for another encription system. Some of you guys were mentioning that UBI will be using Irdeto V4 or MyCryp as Optus B3 hold the licencing. Please more info from insiders before many people wasting more money and making those pricks richer who imports the boxes and sells triple the cost". Thanks..

Small costs means:

* costs for simulcrypting (SMS, Billing etc..)
* changing of customer STB's (for FOXTEL thats all the customers with I2 encrytion say 1/2 million at USD$150 a box. This is equivalent to 75 million)

For the Pay TV companies its a matter of how they deal with piracy and what steps they take to combat it and its no small cost.

does anyone else in the wolrd use this crap MDS Encrption system i have searched most of lyngsat amd the only companies using it is UBI and PBS
if no one else uses it must be a sign that its a really shit system they need to wake up to themselves

why do UBI consider MDS an encryption when its so easily overcome=

How long will it take them "UBI & PBS" to realise that they will loose big money with the modded boxes spread in Aus and when they wake up, they must change their encryption systems so the boxes as well! which will cost us another $200 -$300. When this is gonna end?

Again its not only MDS that has a piracy problem so do the rest! except for NDS ATM.
If UBI go Irdeto 2 heaps in Melbourne will cheer, at least you can't share MDS, and the only reason you can't share MDS is the authors of the images for the Dreambox couldn't be bothered to do a image for it.
Don't worry it has been asked before.

I'm looking for a cheap one too. At least, I don't loose too much money if UBI changes their scrambling system. Please email any offers to fsk@tpg.com.au
