But MDS is not DVB compliant and I doubt it supports the simulcrypt interface. Even id MDS is simulcrypt complient, there is only one control word shared between the CA systems - the weakest encryptions sets the security level. If they do go FTA for a while it gives people from Pas8 companies to check out UBI channels and may decide to join... and it could benefit UBI.

Replacing all customers' receivers with new ones is going to cost a lot. On the top of it, there is INSTALATIONS. It's costly as well. I hope that burden is not going to be transferred to U.B.I. subscribers...

I guess UBI have evaluated the costs of lost revenue vs the cahnging of the new system. I'm sure they have a figure. probably take a hit on it then be better off int eh long run.

Doe sthis mean it will be easier for UBI to distribute english channels? and have full 16:9 digital vid?

The new system has nothing to do with English channels or 16:9.

Most of the international feeds we receive are not in 16:9 format.

Irdeto boxes cost stuff all
$35 u.s each or even less in bulk

As for instalations what is hard about sending out the box and letting the subscriber plug it in themselves?

apsattv, I know it's cheap for the company to buy receivers but even simple plug-in procedure could be a nightmare for some elderly subscribers... Anyway, maybe U.B.I. will buy, deliver and install new boxes free of charge (if you live with the fairies)

Enough is enough, I personally know at least 10 people who where about to purchase boxes and many others who have already purchased their box so they can subscribe to UBI. My advice to them is not to purchase or subscribe until UBI make things clear we need an official announcement if a change is to be made and also a guarantee that all current subscribers will not be inconvenienced or out of pocket in any way. Also those who have boxes and are in the process of subscribing be assured of the same deal. The announcement and assurance needs to occur within 48 hours as March 1st is only 7 working days away

MadScientist,

Read my posts and you will see that:

No paying/valid subscribers will be inconvenienced or need to purchase a new IRD. They will be given a brand new IRD free of charge.

Also do not focus on 1st of March - nothing will be happening on this date!

ABC Asia Pacific have also sent out version 5 irdeto cards for their service...

There is compatability issues with some decoders..

This may be an issue to some who plan to stick the new UBI card in their own IRDETO unit.

I bet the cards will be locked to the new UEC unit..

From what I understand of it the irdeto v5 stream is delivered at a faster rate causing timing issues. This is causing incompatibilty legit Irdeto comaptible hardware.

Some manufacturers will need to release newer firmware.

Word on the street is that UBI has advised its installers that they will start ditributing Irdeto STBs on 17 Mach.

So, MDS STBs will only be good for landfill. Hope nobody is stuck with significant stock or bids for one of these crap boxes on ebay.

The datarates are all set in the DVB spec. The real issue is the version of Irdeto SofCel integrated into the STB. Off the top of my head you need >= ver 2.4 to support the epsilon card.
Problem with Irdeto is that not all STBs are made equally. Irdeto makes their money by charging STB manufactures a royalty on each STB that they produce. Some, mostly Chinese and Korean, vendors fail to pay this fee, in effect pirating the SoftCel. But their SoftCels are never tested (DVT) and are always very old, but they are marketed as Irdeto STBs......... Buyer beware.....

A post by liski himself states that no paying UBI customers will out of pocket.

Liski has mentioned on a different site/forum that all customers will have to pay at least $70 dollars for a new box.

Which is true? Free or not and how mutch.
Or is this a new way of scamming more money out of ex-tarbs subscribers and then switching of again in a few months.
Why is it that Ubi didn't invest into buying/supplying the new irdeto2 in the first place. something is not right here everyone.
"BUYER BEWARE"
I'd also like to mention that many so called "exclusive" channels to UBI where realy FTA and UBI was falsely advertising them as their own.
Ive' been suckered once but not twice!

PS. I do understand UBI is not in any way ascociated with TARBS but they seem to be going the same way.....interesting.
Where is Mr Boulos anyway?

I have been told that there are some management people who were involved in TARBS, also involved in UBI.

One of the Call Centre people just came out and told me when I asked, when I first rang up about some info I needed, because I said how I was unsure whether I could trust UBI based on the TARBS experience of many.

I wonder what the case really is?
