Further to what Horst said, some of the channels have working Now and Next. You can get a guide of sorts by going to http://www.yourtv.com.au/ - Austar Digital covers most of the channels available in the English package, so just select that, then tick the appropriate channels.

You can also see what's on Movie One/Two/Extra/Greats by going to http://www.movienetwork.tv

Some of the other channels have websites too, where you can get programs and more detail. However, "Eurosport" on SelecTV is actually "Eurosport World", which is different to Eurosport, Eurosport 2, Eurosport News, etc. AFAIK, there still isn't a program guide for Eurosport World available anywhere.

Unfortunately, we don't currently support subtitles yet. It's on the list of thing to investigate, but will take some time and depends upon the availability of subtitled feeds. (The UEC 990 STB is specified to support DVB subtitles to allow the possibility for this feature to be brought on line in the furure)

We are in the process of organising an electronic program guide that will be Now/Next for the time being. Some of the channels are already supported, the remainder will come soon.

We are investigateing a more fully featured EPG for our UEC STB, but this will take some time to integrate. We need to crawl before we walk......

We need to crawl before we walk...... [/]

Look, a FULLY featured EPG is necessary and is surely a technical 'can do'. By that I mean a 7 day run, certainly on the Movie Network, perhaps CNN and BBC, but at least those movie channels.

Take a good look for yourself at the ABS-CBN service on Pas 8 with *ANY* DVB irdeto STB to see how it actually looks, full 7 days all channels, excellent EPG, it really is. Ask them for the technical items/know how????

Now and Next is all well and good and we'll celebrate that milestone by taking possession of New Zealand, but it really doesn't help 'plan' ones time, not all folk have internet or the time to randomly go through online TV Guides, or $ to continually buy TV Week.

A 7-day EPG shouldn't just be made for UEC - the EPG *must* function fully for ALL DVB compliant (irdeto of course and technically irrelevant here, almost) decoders. An EPG soley for one brand of decoder is a restriction attempt aimed at alternative DVB compliant set top boxes, it is against an 'open consumer market'.

It is legal and right that Select allow the use of owner equipment, it is also right that Select only look after that which it sells, naturally, but - Select should in good faith to those customers using their own personal gear, create an equal playing field by harmonising a DVB compliant EPG so that *all* customers can view those 7 days in advance AND then be able to press the i button for a synopsis if that exists for a program, just like on ABS/CBN!

I can tell you ABS-CBN's 7 day EPG is a lot easier to navigate than say Austar or Foxtels disaster. THAT was surely created by long term drunkards, god its terrible, but is in part owing the mandatory dirt boxes they insist the great unwashed use.

I should say any provider that insists fully, - that subscribers only use 'provided equipment' really are behind the eightball, a growing number of the populace do have nice expensive amplifiers with surround, large screens and so on. This IS a growing market reality, we DO like Optical & Component out over basic RF and Cinch. We like the ability to record to our PVR's and it's solely our responsibility in doing so, and it IS our inhereted right to do as we please in our private homes; - I would therefore encourage UBI to take whatever means necessary - to follow Selects market lead and allow free equipment choice for your customers, once your change over is complete. Can't tolerate market strangulation. A lot of geat gear out there - that as consumers we like, just let us use the damned stuff.

We don't all have 34cm b/w or colour screens with mono sound! I write here as Consumer Advocate.

BTW - My ABS/CBN supplied decoder, another pile of worthless manure as bad as that 'issued' forth by poor old Austar - to be kind as I can diplomatically could, - I threw out!! Cost me, but I couldn't care less, and am happier for having done so. It's the only ABS/CBN fault I can find,- 'mandatory equipment'. Absolute backward stupidity - this one position, 'use our gear or no sub', dumb, real dumb.

Unless a law is passed by the Commonwealth Parliament to the contrary, NO restriction of choice of set top box should be made. I've said it elsewhere and I say it here, the *only* "enforceable" law is that expressley passed by parliament. Company or supplier agent 'policy' does not and will not cut it at law.

SELECT - SOUND: People around the forums are nagging, rightly, about unbalanced sound levels on the channels, some scream - some whisper, - along those lines, I assumed one customer complaining was the result of too much drink, but two, three and more?? A party maybe?

VISION QUALITY: I challenge anyone to watch 'comfortably' ANY Ku service over Australia on a large screen TV whilst it is set to 'sharp'. The future years must see this quality level improve, drastically. A look at some C band services improves things dramatically! I liken our video quality to those of trapped miners, all very compressed.

I now await the arrival of an MPEG 4 decoder for C band HD, one day maybe. How bout Ku?

Will SOMEONE here make an effort at getting us NASA TV, please? One should not have to fly to NZ to watch it. Andy Thomas is an Australian, not a Kiwi - last time I checked.

Wow ..... a long post.

Here is where we are at:

An 8 day EPG based on DVB-EIT is not far away. Mostly a matter of logistics to collect the relevent data from content suppliers. This will be in English only to start. The UEC STB will only support a now/next EPG, we are investigating a new EPG app for the STB that we can over-the-air download to fix this.

Audio levels are not right yet, we're working on this but there are uplinker in other parts of the world that are a real dog's breakfast ......

You need to distinguish MPEG4 - Part 2 video is the same as MPEG2, part 10 video is the Advanced Video Codec profile (H.264) - this has the real benifit. The problem is the avalability of reasonably priced STBs and the convoluted nature of the MPEG4 royalty arrangements. You might also look un DVB-S2 (uses turbo codes for the FEC).

Video quality - any video on a plasma or LCD with the sharpness set to max will look like a bucket of puss. These dispay devices add soooo many artifacts of their own to the picture that I found them unwatchabble (after 25 years of critically looking at video pictures). The "sharpness" fuctions adds even more artifacts and acts to ehnance the existing mpeg artifacts. Point is that domestic TV manufactureses don't anderstand the concept of appeture correction and confuse it whth luminance channel HF boost and overshoot on high rise time liminance objects. Next time you watch some tennis, note the dark lines either side of the white lines along the side of the court - these are not in the original picture - they are a product of your tv's "sharpness" processor.

Wow quite a good post for a 1st up effort.

Just a comment, the part about the customer supplieing the settop receiver. It may seems simple enough but have you ever thought about how much support is required for them to troubleshoot every 3rd rate chinese $20 box?

Say Selctv has 500 customers using box X from Chanzou chu hung lee they do a minor encoder software upgrade. BANG! those 500 customer start getting video glitches. What happens to those customers?

If the box doesn't have a software patch from the manufacturer to fix it. That means 500 lost customers..

Just to clarify my last post (done in a bit of a rush). This doesn't mean that SELECTV's video quality is beyound criticism, in fact there are issues that we know about and are in the process of fixing (hopefully, you'll notice a improvement on the English channels next week). Just that those big plasmas can be like looking thru a dirty window.

Also, we will only support and guarentee compatibility of the UEC and Opentel STBs. We have already done s/w upgrades to the Opentel and have the capacity with the UEC. Other Irdeto STBs seem to work well, just that we cannot physically support every type of STB in the marketplace (the analogue would the the FTA terrestrial neworks guarenteeing that every model of digital STB is compatible). So, yes, we like the open equipment model, but there are a few issues attached.

I've stated the open model, right of choice as being appropriate and stand by that.

Apsattv; I appreciate full well the volume of junk decoders - some will activate a card, some won't but most play Select after activation, except say a MySat box (more pottage) - these report Error 05 'invalid card' (ABS-CBN like). But the main stayers like Topfield, Humax are not a problem.

One of the complaints about Select; "I keep activating, but my card just doesn't work", I've put down to people not inserting the card UPRIGHT when using CAMS. All in all - the open market works and helps keeps the importers on their toes.

Why providers feel some odd need to spend a hundred and fifty thousand dollars on STB's has me buggered. The dedicated satellite shop supply market should, and increasingly does well for the consumer, not quite the case just yet with big chain retailers, but that will change. I am NOT a seller btw - but a Consumer Advocate - if you wish to see nagging visit "www.notgoodenough.org" under Gripe HQ. I should say Select would do well to print large advertorial posters that SHOPS and retailers can put up, at the moment your most invisible.

A problem exists with older 2.06B cams. Revision 1.0 or greater work with Select (but not Austar), the suspect older types need to be reflashed with Revision 1.0 or greater from SCM, or freecamed - not a problem, but one that upsets Irdeto - too bad - they need to pull their collective fingers out and start catching up with demand.

Importers need to test their STB's first before importing.

SelectTV; I'd again like you to recognise the necessity of an EPG that suits ALL DVB Irdeto decoders. As I've said, - the ABS-CBN 7-day EPG works on every single decoder I've tried to date - from Humax 5400/5410Z unmodded through to Topfield, Extreme, gasp - even UEC 720ix (Aurora)!! It even works on a Wavelength STB!

If they can achieve that - then surely so can we?

Sharp/Lasersat - It is appropriate, and quite normal for people to ask technical or consumer questions on Sat related forums such as this, hell, if it's 'nasty technical' send them to Austech to nag, whinge and ask, so be it.

I for one want Select to survive, it really is THE most consumer friendly provider we have insofar allowances. I do wonder though if they, or for that matter UBI would get better transponder pricing off AMC23?

[/]

Pay TV operators have always supplied the box as part of the service. The average viewer pay tv is targetted at has little to NO interest whatsoever in purchasing their own satellite equipment unless you can tempt them with lower subcription fees.

The reason they give you decoder from brand x model y as part of the service is to with levels of quality and standards. A service based around "buy your own decoder from anywhere you want" would be a nightmare.

Imagine a scenario where Selectv does a minor encoder software upgrade which causes 500 boxes to start having lip sync problems...

One little glitch and they lose 500 customers in a blink

I think Selectv should have a list of approved boxes and publish it on their website. If dealers want their receiver to be on it they should meet certain standards of performance and compatibilty and SOFTWARE support.

RE: your last comment about AMC23, you need to reread the prospectus and see the reasons why they are on Pas8. Has to do with amount of existing dishes and possible partnerships with other operators as in suppliing English channels to other pay operators.

All reasonable points .......

Just a word about STBs. Not all STBs are created equal! Even those that claim DVB compience are quite often only partially compliant. The suite of DVB specs runs to tens of thousands of pages - I just print the ones I use most and that fills two big D-Ring binders - double sided. Some aspects, like bouquets are not mandatory. It's a complex thing to manage.

As you poited out, there are compatibility prblems within the Irdeto camp with various versions om the CAM firmware. These problems also exist for older versions of SoftCel (the Irdeto s/w that lives in a STB) but this can't be resolves as easily as re-flashing a CAM because its STB type specific.

We will transmit a DVB standard EIT table in English - as simple as it gets, most EPG's should work with this. However, this doesn't mean that a third party box will support content descriptors, language descritors, parental ratings lockout etc. It's a real mine field.

The reason we like to control the STB is to avoid these problems. We sell a $30 p.m. service (we make a small margin on this), it costs about $30 per hour to answer a phone call, so one support call can wipe out a few months of subscription margin. If we control the STB we reduce the support problems and costs.

I see that the SelecTV website has a Q&A section, which is OK, but has any thought been given to having your own forum(s)? Or is that too much of a minefield?

Your own forums for Select tv would introduced abuse like what happened to this forum in the early days for UBI.
As for boxes my mate uses a dreambox 7000 with a choice of 30 softcams to use and he has no complaints watching Select tv non whatsoever.

Thinking about it at the moment, but too many other things to finish first. We are in the process of transfering the Q&A into a searchable knowledgebase that should be easier to use. Also launched ERT on the Greek packaage today .......

Select TV -
I reiterate the open market model as being appropriate, it is proper you have done so and I do appreciate the economic argument.

In relation to CI decoders using Irdeto CAMS 2.06B and 2.09 - I have found, regardless of STB, NO PROBLEMS activating Select TV - where these are Revision 1.0 or greater. OLDER Revision owners of say 2.06 and 2.06B CAMS need only have their CAMS re-flashed.

Refer them to the SCM website and/or Austech for 'know-how' IF they want them upgraded, OR to any number of satellite equipment shops who will do the same for a small fee.

The customer only need check their decoder menu under "Common Interface" then "STATUS" to see if their STB will function. IF the card is inserted properly, it WILL show the Serial Number - here, - all WILL be good.

A problem with CI decoders can apply when the customer has not inserted the sub card "CONTACTS - UPRIGHT", thats it pure and simple.

A similar problem occurs in some embedded Irdeto decoders.

We'll forget those that have not set up their dish, LNB settings properly then complain, - these are pure install questions.

I look forward to your revamped Q&A. I suggest it reference this forum, Austech general and reference should be made as to dish set-up, cabling, switches to the Vetrun site. Apsattv should be referenced for 'news' in the field.

My view is that decoder issues will all settle down - those VERY FEW that do not work by way of activation on V5 cards (I know of two) will simply go the way of the dinosaur, even though they play after activation. (I note refences to lip sync issues - Topfield released firmware update for this on anotehr service, all very easy).

It is the 'satellite forums' that take many questions from customers. Because in my work, legal-roads, government, - I tend to spend time in motoring, consumer and parenting forums when I have the time, - here too I refer folk to forums such as Austech etc, or offer advice on a related subject matter where I can.

NOW OT a moment; whilst Select TV might not like to 'advertise', is it feasible to have a small, light paper, say A5 size flyer made up that can be letter boxed by those in need of exersize? (Or downloaded).

At the moment your pretty invisible, I can't speak for UBI but presume they advertise 'niche'?

Again, for the third time take a look at ABS-CBN. The card I have is a V4.1 (like Austars Spongbob but not married) Nationality: 'USA' - load those in and take a look at the TFC, Pinoy and ANC News Channel EPG (Not Cinema One); THAT is how an EPG should run, 7 days.
