The dandelion is a tenacious plant, the bane of many a gardener. No matter where you go, a dandelion is sure to be around. The bright golden yellow flower , which then turns into the wonderful dandelion 'clock', a great way for children to learn the time, by blowing the seeds away with each count(I WAS ONE OF THOSE CHILDREN THAT SPREAD THE SEEDS !).
But..lets look at this plant a bit closer to see if it should be classed as a nuisance weed or should it be elevated to a different status.
The dandelion( Taraxacum officinale) to give it it's 'posh' name, is actually a very valuable herb and has been used in medicinal potions shall we say...for a very long time. Dandelion is a rich source of vitamins A, B complex, C, and D, as well as minerals such as iron, potassium, and zinc.
In Europe, herbalists incorporated it into remedies for fever, boils, eye problems, diabetes, and diarrhoea.
Native Americans also used dandelion to treat kidney disease, swelling, skin problems, heartburn, and stomach upset.
Chinese medicinal practitioners traditionally used dandelion to treat digestive disorders, appendicitis, and breast problems (such as inflammation or lack of milk flow).
Today, dandelion roots are mainly used as an appetite stimulant, digestive aid, and for liver and gall bladder function. Dandelion leaves are used as a diuretic to stimulate the excretion of urine.
Other uses include - The leaves are used to add to salads and make teas. Dandelion is a well known substitute for coffee. The flowers can be made into wine.
There are many other uses I know I have not included here, as the list is quite extensive.
So..in my thinking...could it be that the Dandelion is actually a tenacious plant because, it is meant to survive? Is it being offered as a medicine and a helper from the Earth for our own good? Maybe we should look into why and what we classify as weeds?
I give the Dandelion :thumbup]
