UBI are getting 4 channels from DigiTurk (Lig TV, PowerTurk, TurkMax and Show TV)
UBI have been in negoiations with DigiTurk regarding our contractual issues.
DigiTurk are requesting unreasonable fee for Lig TV which our subscribers would need to pay 4 times what they currently pay just to cover the Lig TV license costs, plus the costs to actually bring the channels from Turkey to Australia.
As a result of the failed negotiations because of DigiTurk's unreasonable and unfair expectations, several channel changes will be happening tonight:
- PowerTurk will no longer be avaliable in Australia - we have succesfully found an even better music channel replacement in Kral TV
- TurkMax will no longer be avaliable in Australia - we are in the advance stages of finialising a new contract with a premium Turkish movie channel to replace this
- Due to the breakdown in negotiations, DigiTurk have decided to unfairly switch off Show TV. UBI has an independent relationship with the Show TV Managing Director, who is challenging the actions of DigiTurk to resolve the situation immediatley. We hope Show TV will return within 72hrs
As a result we will stop charging customers for Lig TV and all custoemrs will be credited $9.95 if they have been billed/paid since 10/07/07
We will allow customers to terminate even if they are still in-contract term - they must send the request in writing.
Lig TV Q&A
Why is Lig TV no longer on UBI? UBI has been negotiating for some time with DigiTurk for the rights to broadcast their channels in Australia. DigiTurk have demanded an unreasonable fee for these rights, which UBI does not want to pass onto its customers. As a result, on Thursday 9 August DigiTurk gave UBI 24 hours notice that to the signal of Lig TV, PowerTurk, TurkMax, and Show TV at midnight on Friday 10 August.
Why does UBI not pay DigiTurk what they want? DigiTurk has asked for an unreasonable amount of money for the rights to their channels in Australia. They have shown they only care about money, and do not care about Turkish people in Australia who are passionate about soccer. The fact that they cut their signal with only 24 hours notice, given UBI no time to advise our customers and giving customers no chance to contact DigiTurk to explain their concerns, shows that DigiTurk do not care about Turkish people in Australia.
If UBI were to pay DigiTurk what they want, UBI would have to charge our customers at least 4 times the $9.95 we currently charge them to watch Lig TV. We believe our customers would not find this price fair, given the concerns they expressed when we asked them to pay only $9.95 for Lig TV. Furthermore, we do not think our customers should be paying an unreasonable price to watch the soccer they love.
What can the Turkish community in Australia do? Firstly, they can express their frustration and disappointment directly to DigiTurk, and let them know that they believe they should be able to watch Lig TV for a fair price in Australia. Perhaps DigiTurk will listen to customers and decide they are willing to offer UBI a fair price for people in Australia to be able to watch Lig TV.
Secondly, if UBI finds that our customers are prepared to pay $40 for Lig TV instead of the $9.95 they currently pay, and that at least 3000 customers are willing to pay the $40, then we will gladly pay DigiTurk what they want and continue to bring Lig TV to our customers.
What about customers who just paid $9.95 for Lig TV? UBI will credit all Lig TV customers the $9.95 they paid for Lig TV on their last bill. This credit will automatically apply to the customers next bill.
LINEUP CHANGES AS OF MIDNIGHT 10/08/07 ( CURRENT > NEW ) CH60 VIZYON > VIZYON (24HRS) CH61 ATV > ATV CH62 SHOW TV > ART CARD CH63 EURO D > EURO D CH64 EURO STAR > EURO STAR CH65 NTV > NTV CH66 LIG TV > PRESS CONFERENCE LOOP CH67 POWERTURK > KRAL TV CH68 TURKMAX > KANAL 7 (24 HRS) CH69 STV > STV CH70 TRT INT > TRT INT

English: Dear Eren, The contract we have had with UBI Pty LTD has ended on 1st of August 2007. Due to the reasons of negotiating of the contract, the broadcast resumed normally, but due to business reasons, even though we have tried our best to get this contract to happen, the broadcast ended on 10.08.2007. As to us (Digiturk) asking for more money, rising member fees are entirely not true. Member fees, rise of fees and making of packages are entirely in the hands of UBI Pty. Ltd. The yearly income are risen on the amount of members that have been added on. Although what ever did to get the Turkish community to get these channels, the broadcasting of the 2007-2008 season could not have to come an agreement. We are trying our best to get these and other sport channels back to you in Australia via other servicing companies. Very soon, we will have those channels broadcasted by another carrier. Thank you

faruk i was just on the phone with someone who knows this case very good they said they are speaking with a company called "Foxtel" and the price they asked from UBI was 19.90 USD. Like they said to us in the email, UBI is thinking of its own profit and doubling their offered price and feeding that to us...

They must be so thick!... They most probably calculated the total income from the subscribers in the past few months forgetting that many ppl cancelled the Lig-Tv for that period as there was not much to see, and the result of their calculation was obviously very low....And, I belive that they are trying to force the Turkish community to get cheaper deals so they can recover the loss they had in the pass...It's not fair to the ppl who has been with UBI since the beginning of the tarbs like myself...we are the ones who will be paying the dept...

yep definately.... If Digiturk was charging $40 for LigTV they would be charging all their consumers including DFT (American based UBI) where by the way DFT charges 46.70 USD which is (46.70 USD = 55.6460 AUD) so we can see basically who is trying to rip off us.....

I also heard that there was another provider trying to establish some sort of 30 Turkish channels included in its program list for about $30 per month....I'm not 100% sure who's behind this but looks like something is cooking and we'll be served better taste foods soon...

There are 100s of Turkish channels in Turkey....I'm sure you're not aware of this.... Yes ofcourse i know this but the costs involved to bring over 30 channels from Turkey would be more then the income they would make from subsribers here from just one group of people Its just not going to happen in my eyes these are all rumours as when Tarbs shut there were hundreds of rumours going round its happening all over again now All rumours will be looked at as rumours till i actually see some hard evidence or the actual thing on satellite then I will stand corrected

If another company was to start you can be sure it wouldn't carry any of the channels currently part of the UBI Turkish Package as they are exclusive and on a long term contract unlike Lig TV which only want a year to year contract as stated by the UBI Chairman at the press conference in front of the Australian Turkish media.
If this so could new company plans to launch I hope they take a look at the licence fees, satellite transponder space to carry the channels over here (eg. Telstar 10 - there is no direct hop from Europe to Australia) plus transponder rental in Australia (eg. Optus B3) and then all the other associated business costs.
This rumour of a new Turkish DTH provider has been brewing since the collapse of TARBS and originated in Melbourne and till this day nothing has been done as they know how hard it is and in the end will end up loosing money in the venture.
Competition is good and would be good as it would give a choice to the Turkish company but I highly doubt they'd survive.
Why would UBI want to increase the price of Lig TV themselves and in return hurt the Turkish community who have been loyal to UBI since the start? Someone is lying here and I can guarantee you it's not UBI. Ask yourself again, why would UBI want to increase the price of Lig TV on it's own if DigiTurk haven't requested a increase in the licence fee? Don't you think that if it was UBI that was pushing for a higher price that DigiTurk would be happier with a higher royalty being paid to them? Just step back a minute and use some logic and wonder how could UBI be the one requesting a higher fee on it's own.
When a new contract is being renewed and the content owner doesn't request a increase in the licence fee then why would the broadcaster request a higher fee from subscribers? Makes sense? Nope!
I do know there is quite a few channels in Turkey but you need to ask yourself how many of them are actually quality channels, have clearance and would have enough content to sustain being broadcaster in Australia? Euro Star was the last channel we added due to the fact that it finally launched an international version. The D-Smart line up as quite a few good channels we could look at getting since UBI have a very good relationship with the Kanal D owner.
I highly doubt you will see Lig TV on Foxtel. The only thing I could imagine would be to see UBI Turkish channels on Foxtel.
Also calling the UBI Call Centre and abusing staff is not on! The kind of foul language given to the staff is not something that someone should be exposed to.

Exactly why would UBI want to do this to themselves by losing LigTV and losing subscribers
You have to think they were forced into removing it cause of the fees why would UBI want to put itself thru this if it didt need to really guys do u really think UBI wanted this to happen for them to lose these channels really come on.... doesnt take much to see the logic in this and I really doubt you guys would of been happy with paying anymore more money for LigTV you's all started complaining when they asked for $10 extra a month i can just imagine the outcry if they charged anymore for it...
If they didt need to raise the fee they would of kept it im sure they wouldt want to put themselves in this position and lose out why would UBI want to lose subscribers seriously its not hard if you think abit.....

Liski & Laser....
I agree on some degree with both of you guys...but I'm still surprised that no-one has ever told us what was the requested increase....What I understood from Mick's comments on 4 times payments required..."but at the same time, he mentioned, if 3000 subscriber pays $40 per month than the Lig-Tv will be on air again..."...that's the bit I do not understand...
I'm asking both of you guys....How many ppl were subscribed on Lig-TV just before the Turkish season finished...probably 2-3 months ago...and how many ppl are on now!...just before the season started which is just two weeks ago...
Can anyone tell me the difference?...Its not very hard to understand why UBI have suffered loss on Lig-Tv due to cancellation of the channel during this off season..and now we will be punished respectively...

I'm pretty sure there is a minimum amount they would need to pay Lig and proberly 3000 is the number they need as the minimum requirement to pay them

There was 8 people subscribed to Lig TV a la carte at $39.95 (as advised by the UBI Chairman) and in the low hundreds subscribed to Lig TV add on at $9.95
At the time it was $9.95 a month so 4 times would be the figure you see today $39.95. 3000 subscribers x $40 works out to $120,000 a month to cover the costs of Lig TV alone.
That in my opinion is way to much for one channel when that figure easily pays for approx 5 channels per a month.

Eren,
That is totally your opinion but having worked with Mr Boulos I believe he is a top business man. If it wasn't for his dream no one could be hopeful to see the amount of ethnic channels you see today in Australia.

THEN why doesn't Mr. Boulos pro rata the charges of what profit he makes from the other channels and charge us $70.00 a month you know this has happened before and the Turkish community are feeling that they are targetted by Mr. Boulos. Why are we paying for greek, serb, etc channels when we only want turkish.. See ? Its common sense if he is charging everyone the same price for ALL channels ?
