Magnitude 4.5 earthquake strikes near Soledad, Monterey County, California, United StatesThe United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 4.5 quake in the United States near Soledad, Monterey County, California, only 6 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Saturday 2 January 2021 at 6:42 am local time at a very shallow depth of 4 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tres Pinos (pop. 480) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Soledad (pop. 25,000) 14 miles away, Gonzales (pop. 8,500) 15 miles away, Ridgemark (pop. 3,000) 16 miles away, Chualar (pop. 1,200) 17 miles away, Hollister (pop. 37,500) 20 miles away, Greenfield (pop. 17,200) 20 miles away, and Salinas (pop. 157,400) 25 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Jose (pop. 1,026,900) located 63 miles from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
