Magnitude 3.1 earthquake strikes near Big Spring, Howard County, Texas, United States 3.1 quake 31 Dec 7:23 pm (GMT -6) An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred only 13 minutes ago 19 miles west of Big Spring, Texas, United States, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles beneath the epicenter near Big Spring, Howard County, Texas, USA, early evening on Thursday 31 December 2020 at 7:23 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Stanton (pop. 2,900) located 12 miles from the epicenter, and Big Spring (pop. 28,900) 19 miles away. In Midland (pop. 133,000, 27 miles away), Lamesa (pop. 9,400, 32 miles away), Gardendale (pop. 1,600, 40 miles away), Andrews (pop. 13,800, 44 miles away), and Odessa (pop. 119,000, 46 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
