Light magnitude 4.2 quake hits 17 km southwest of Salina Cruz, Mexico early afternoonA very shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, Mexico. According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Tuesday 12 January 2021 at 2:52 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 4 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Playa Azul (pop. 22) located 9 km from the epicenter, Guelaguechi (pop. 520) 9 km away, and Playa Brasil (pop. 220) 10 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in El Morro (pop. 2,600) located 13 km from the epicenter, El Carrizal (pop. 1,300) 13 km away, Colonia Santita (pop. 510) 15 km away, Rincon Bamba (pop. 930) 17 km away, Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) 17 km away, and Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 42,100) 32 km away.
