Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 31 km south of Reykjavik, Iceland early morning 4.7 quake 8.2 Km ESE of Krýsuvík, Iceland, 7 Mar 2021 2:01 am (GMT +0) An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 11 minutes ago 31 km south of Reykjavik, Iceland, the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.2 km beneath the epicenter near Reykjavik, Reykjavíkurborg, Capital Region, Iceland, early morning on Sunday 7 March 2021 at 2:01 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Hafnarfjordur (pop. 26,800) located 23 km from the epicenter, Hafnarfjörður (pop. 26,800) 23 km away, Garðabaer (pop. 11,400) 25 km away, and Garðabær (pop. 11,400) 25 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Alftanes (pop. 2,400) located 27 km from the epicenter, Kopavogur (pop. 31,700) 28 km away, Reykjavik (pop. 118,900) 31 km away, Seltjarnarnes (pop. 4,300) 33 km away, Mosfellsbaer (pop. 8,700) 36 km away, and Mosfellsbær (pop. 8,700) 36 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
