Significant magnitude 5.2 earthquake 31 km northwest of Vik, Iceland5.2 quake 6.5 Km NNE of GoĆ°abunga, Iceland, 14 Mar 2021 2:15 pm (GMT +0) A magnitude 5.2 earthquake near Vik, Mýrdalshreppur, South, Iceland, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the Icelandic Met Office (IMO), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 14.3 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Sunday 14 March 2021 at 2:15 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Vik (pop. 280) located 31 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Vestmannaeyjar (pop. 4,200) located 61 km from the epicenter, and Selfoss (pop. 6,500) 93 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
