Webmaster Launch Director Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 800,656 Los Angeles, USA	Moderate tremor of magnitude 4.0 just reported 36 km northwest of Akita, Japan 4.0 quake 16 Apr 8:33 am (GMT +9) Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported a magnitude 4.0 quake in Japan near Akita, Akita Shi, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday 16 April 2021 at 8:33 am local time at a shallow depth of 10.3 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tennō (pop. 22,700) located 20 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Akita (pop. 320,100) located 36 km from the epicenter, Noshiro (pop. 51,100) 46 km away, Takanosu (pop. 20,500) 67 km away, Ōmagari (pop. 38,800) 79 km away, Ōdate (pop. 64,500) 84 km away, Yokote (pop. 39,200) 92 km away, and Hanawa (pop. 36,900) 97 km away.
