Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes near Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines 4.2 quake 20 May 3:55 am (GMT +8) A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines, was reported only 20 minutes ago by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 1 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday 20 May 2021 at 3:55 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Siari (pop. 3,500) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Ponot (pop. 6,600) 11 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sindangan (pop. 5,700) located 19 km from the epicenter, and Manukan (pop. 11,500) 23 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dipolog City (pop. 93,500) located 47 km from the epicenter, Dapitan (pop. 50,500) 60 km away, Mahayag (pop. 17,100) 64 km away, Pagadian (pop. 186,900) 84 km away, and Muricay (pop. 132,100) 87 km away.
