Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 25 km southeast of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico 4.6 quake 24 Jun 4:10 pm (GMT -4) A very shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Mayaguez, Mayagüez Barrio-Pueblo, Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday 24 June 2021 at 4:10 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 8.2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In La Parguera (pop. 1,100) located 2 km from the epicenter, Lajas (pop. 5,300) 7 km away, San German (pop. 12,100) 10 km away, Sabana Grande (pop. 9,000) 14 km away, Cabo Rojo (pop. 10,800) 15 km away, Guanica (pop. 9,200) 15 km away, and Hormigueros (pop. 11,900) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
