Moderate magnitude 4.9 earthquake 113 km northeast of Hasaki, Japan 4.9 quake 3 Aug 12:35 am (GMT +9) An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred only 18 minutes ago 113 km northeast of Hasaki, Japan, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km beneath the epicenter near Hasaki, Chōshi-shi, Chiba, Japan, after midnight on Tuesday 3 August 2021 at 12:35 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hasaki (pop. 39,200) located 113 km from the epicenter, Hitachi (pop. 186,300) 116 km away, Hitachi-Naka (pop. 156,800) 122 km away, and Katsuta (pop. 156,000) 122 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
