Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 39 km northwest of Pariaman, Indonesia early morning 4.2 quake 15 Aug 5:31 am (GMT +7) An intermediate magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early morning near Pariaman, Sumatra Barat, Indonesia. According to Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, the quake hit on Sunday 15 August 2021 at 5:31 am local time at an intermediate depth of 119 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pariaman (pop. 92,200) located 39 km from the epicenter, and Bukittinggi (pop. 98,700) 46 km away. In Payakumbuh (pop. 121,600, 76 km away), Padang (pop. 840,400, 84 km away), Padang (pop. 840,400, 84 km away), and Solok (pop. 48,400, 95 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
