Magnitude 3.5 earthquake strikes near Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington, USA 3.5 quake 23 Aug 3:27 pm (GMT -7) A magnitude 3.5 earthquake near Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington, USA, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0.4 miles beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Monday 23 August 2021 at 3:27 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hamilton (pop. 300) located 7 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sedro Woolley (pop. 10,800) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Burlington (pop. 8,600) 18 miles away, Mount Vernon (pop. 34,100) 21 miles away, Bellingham (pop. 85,100) 25 miles away, Arlington (pop. 18,900) 30 miles away, and Anacortes (pop. 16,400) 30 miles away. In Marysville (pop. 66,800, 40 miles away), and Everett (pop. 108,000, 45 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
