Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 54 km northeast of Aksu, China early morning4.2 quake 54 km east of Aksu, Xinjiang, China, Sep 15, 2021 1:52 am (GMT +8) Just 29 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Aksu, Xinjiang, China. The tremor was recorded early morning on Wednesday, September 15th, 2021, at 1:52 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Aksu (pop. 340,000) located 54 km from the epicenter, Aykol (pop. 11,300) 75 km away, and Aral (pop. 260,000) 90 km away.
