Moderate magnitude 4.4 quake hits 54 km west of Kunduz, Afghanistan early afternoon 4.4 quake 13 Sep 2:34 pm (GMT +4:30) A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Kunduz, Afghanistan, was reported only 20 minutes ago by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Monday, September 13th, 2021, at 2:04 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Khulm (pop. 64,900) located 52 km from the epicenter, Shahritus (pop. 13,000) 52 km away, and Kunduz (pop. 161,900) 54 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Qarāwul (pop. 24,500) located 65 km from the epicenter, Khanabad (pop. 71,500) 77 km away, Baghlan (pop. 108,400) 85 km away, Termez (pop. 140,400) 99 km away, and Mazari Sharif (pop. 303,300) 103 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
