Significant 5.8 quake hits near Heraklion, Crete, Greece

A shallow magnitude 5.8 earthquake was reported in the morning near Heraklion, Crete, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Monday, September 27th, 2021, at 9:17 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Thrapsanon (pop. 1,500) located 7 km from the epicenter, Heraklion (pop. 137,200) 25 km away, Néa Alikarnassos (pop. 12,900) 26 km away, and Gazi (pop. 12,600) 29 km away.
In Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) located 42 km from the epicenter, Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 45 km away, and Rethymnon (pop. 32,500) 76 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
